-
-
- The plug-ins truly are the most exciting part.
-
-
- : Hey, NewTek deserves to make a buck like anyone else, but it's sad that
- : they've decided to sell out. Let's look at the reasoning I'm getting for
- : no Mac version.
-
- Sell out? That is truly a sign of perverse advocacy.

-
- : Yeah, I've got a couple.
-
- : Is it only a callous, money grubbing decision? It might be OK, if it was

- : processors were 2.7% of the total processors sold in 1994, and that's all
-
- It wont be 1995 or 1996 it will be a lot higher.
-
-
- : RISC chips, MIPS, Alpha's, whatever. So, NewTek's not after just masses,
- : or they'd get the full percentage of 68000 chips, nearly 4 times the share
- : of RISC.
-
- They didnt choose the PC. They chose NT. Which gives them a peice of
- software that is portable, but most of all scaleable.
-
-
-
- : The defense came up in causal circles, that NewTek wanted to expand it's
- : presence in Post-Production with SGI. I can't blame them it that's true,
- : but still makes me wonder why skip the Mac? If they're interested in
- : post, Macs are all over the place, and at this point, I'd easily say they
-
- Yah, but how many people will pay the cash for a Mac to sit and render
- 75% of the time.
-
-
- : come right after the workstations and dedicated systems in the minds of
- : post professionals and probably outrank them in numbers.
-
- : I talked to one of the NewTek reps at the Toaster Expo, and asked "What
- : made you choose the platforms you did?" He told me NewTek picked the easy
- : ones, and programming on the Mac is very hard.
-
- : I always find the arguement "It's too hard to program a Mac" a good laugh.
- : Oddly, many companies seem to be staying in business writing and selling
- : Mac software. Sheesh, you can find PowerMac shareware already. If people
- : can program it for nearly no money on their spare time, a company like
- : NewTek should be able, if they try real, real hard, to find the resources
- : to do a port. 68K assembly between Amigas and Macs can't be totally
- : foriegn languages.
-
- There is big difference in making a tic tac toe game and a fully
- implimented GUI for a complex program like LW and modeler.
-
- It would take probably a similiar amount of time to port the GUI to
- either NT or System 7. They chose NT because it is a larger market.
-
- Why would you port it to 68000 Mac machines, they are effectively dead,
- and not used by the 'professional' people you are talking about.
-
- Why port it to the Powermacs when there are so few of them, and they will
- run NT in the future anyway?
-
-
- : Now the rep also said the manager in charge of LightWave is very
- : interested in doing a port, and they've had a lot of requests for it. But
- : talk is cheap. Be honest. Just tell us you don't care, or you'll do it
- : when you can make enough money to by Tim more helicopters. We're adults;
- : we can take it.
-
- It doesnt sound like it.
-
- : But we wont be strung along forever. Some Mac users are going to pass on
- : it, and by the time it does come out, if ever, it will be too late. The
- : iron is hot. NewTek actually has a good chance of becoming "The
- : Professional Standard in 3D Graphics" like they arrogantly boast in their
-
- Still can, the Mac has little to do with it.
-
- The professionals you talk about will buy an NT machine if the tools are
- there, just like the bought SGIs, becuase the tools were there.
-
- LW will be successful on the basis of the softare, not the hardware it
- runs on. Within reason of course, "yah lets get that sinclair Z-80 port
- going.
-
- By the way does anyone have one of those I could buy?
-
-
- : literature. But not like this. Instead, they run the risk of pissing off
- : a influential segment of the market.
-
-
- I think the influencial segment of that market can afford to buy a new
- computer if the tool warrants it.
-
- If apple teaches the PowerMacs how to run NT, then who cares.
-
-
- : So what's the real reason?
-
- Money, no other reason. This doe not make them money grubbing Nimrods,it
- makes them a company that will likely be around in the future.
-
- No we dont all hate you.
-
- Dont worry, be happy blah blah blah.....
